In Memoriam: Dr. Fred F. Wampler

Dr. Fred F. Wampler ’47, Professor of Education at Bridgewater College for 31 years, died on July 2, 2025. He was 100.

Wampler was born in China to Dr. Frederick J. Wampler 1908 and Rebecca Skeggs Wampler 1910. He earned a B.A. from Bridgewater College in 1947, an M.A. from The George Washington University in 1948 and an Ed.D. from the University of Maryland College Park in 1959.

Wampler taught at Bridgewater from 1957 until his retirement in 1988. During that time, he served as the head of the Education Department, Director of Placement and Director of Student Teaching. He also served as a member of the Virginia Advisory Committee on Teacher Education in the Virginia Department of Education. Before joining the faculty at BC, Wampler was a teacher, assistant principal and principal at public schools in Arlington and Prince Georges County, Va.

Wampler and his late wife, Dorris Berry Wampler ’47, provided many opportunities for BC students as they founded three endowed scholarships: the Rick & Steve Wampler Scholarship, the Garland Reed Chemistry Award and the Frederick J. and Ernest M. Wampler and Wives Scholarship.

Wampler was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years. He is survived by his two sons, Frederick (Rick) Wampler ’70 and Stephen (Steve) Wampler ’72.
