Two seniors have been honored for excellence in the Department of English at Bridgewater College.
The Outstanding Senior Award in English was presented to Arturo Alcazar, and Anastasiya Kalyuk received the Outstanding Senior Award in Professional Writing.
The recipients are selected based on excellence in work performed in the English and professional writing majors.
Alcazar, an English major with a minor in American studies, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Alcazar of Purcellville, Va.
Alcazar is a member of the Philomathes Society, Bridgewater’s scholastic honor society; Alpha Chi, a national scholastic honor society; and Sigma Tau Delta, an international collegiate English honor society. He is a member of the college’s Flory Honors Program. He served as a tutor in the Writing Center.
He completed an honors project titled “Old Industries, Old Conflicts: The Significance of American Epic Novels.”
Following graduation on May 1, Alcazar will pursue a master of arts in American Studies at Brown University.
Kalyuk, a professional writing major, is from Grottoes, Va. She completed a research project, “A Framework for Writing Self-Efficacy: Students’ Belief in their Own Ability to Succeed in a Postsecondary Writing Classroom,” with Dr. Sam Hamilton, assistant professor of English. Following graduation on May 1, Kalyuk plans to pursue a master of arts in digital media strategy at Bridgewater College.
