Rae Martz and Cayla Riddick presented a senior recital on April 17 in the Concert Hall in the Carter Center for Worship and Music at Bridgewater College. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the audience was limited to students and faculty who were required to wear masks and maintain social distancing.
For her flute recital, Martz performed “Sicilienne” from Pelléas et Mélisande by Gabriel Fauré and “Sad Song to Iwate,” “Fight of the Warrior on Horseback” and “The Waters of Kusatu” from Five Songs on Japanese Themes by Eugène Bozza. She also performed “Dolce,” “Allegro” and “Spirituoso” from Fantasie in D Minor by Georg Philipp Telemann and “Study in C Major” from Etudes Mignonnes by Giuseppe Gariboldi.
Martz, a psychology major with a minor in music, is the daughter of Chris and Angie Martz of Roanoke, Va. Martz is a member of the Philomathes Society, Bridgewater’s Scholastic honor society. She serves as a Soar Mentor and as a Student Ambassador.
For her flute recital, Riddick performed “Madrigal for Flute and Piano” by Phillip Gaubert, “Allegro moderato,” “Siciliano” and “Allegro” from Sonata in E♭ Major by Johann Sebastian Bach. She also performed “Moderato” and “L’istesso tempo” from Suite Modale for Flute and Piano by Ernest Bloch and “Andante in C Major” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, cadenza by Dianne Aitken.
Riddick performed two duets: “Andante” and “Tempo giusto” by Giuseppe Gariboldi with Dr. Vimari Colón-León, assistant professor of music at Bridgewater College, and “Menuet” from Les Danses Amuzantes, Op. 4 by Nicolas Chédeville with Martz.
Martz and Riddick study flute under Colón-León. Lacey Johnson, instructor of music at Bridgewater College, accompanied both musicians on piano.
Riddick, a music and mathematics double major, lives with her guardian, Cathy Riddick of Chesapeake, Va. Her parents are Teresa Riddick and Kenneth Boone. Riddick is a member of the Symphonic Band and the flute choir. She is a member of the Philomathes Society and serves as vice president of the Creative Writing Club.
