What to Expect

  • Advanced classes that develop speaking, listening, comprehension, reading and writing in Spanish.
  • A small and interactive program that immerses you in the language.
  • Opportunities to explore literature, history and cultures related to the language.
  • Learn from fluent faculty who will work closely with you to help you to develop your own language skills and cultural competency.

Courses

Our majors study a core of courses designed to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills along with cultural sensitivity and knowledge. Students supplement the core with courses best suited to their future plans.

The Structure of Spanish
SPAN-310

This course introduces students to the linguistic structure of Spanish. By allowing students to write papers, make oral presentations and lead in-class discussions, students will learn the main aspects of the structure of Spanish.

Art of Conversation
SPAN-325

Reinforces more advanced syntactical structures of the language. Further develops these and vocabulary through expository, persuasive, argumentative and debate style speaking.

Spanish Culture and Civilization
SPAN-340

The historical development of Spain, including consideration of geography, as well as political, social, economic, intellectual, and artistic factors. Taught in Spanish.

Careers

A degree in Spanish will help you pursue a career with employers such as: bilingual/translating services, the Department of Defense, hospitals, public and private schools, Rosetta Stone, Social Security Office, State Department, and Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

Like many BC graduates, you might enter graduate schools such as: Virginia Tech (Teaching ESL), George Mason University (Teaching ESL), Mercer University, McAfee School of Theology (Divinity & Clinical Counseling), Middlebury College (Spanish, Japanese), College of Notre Dame of Maryland (Education), Virginia Commonwealth University (Pharmacy).
