PEN America works to ensure that people everywhere have the freedom to create literature, to convey information and ideas, to express their views, and to access the views, ideas, and literatures of others. Founded in 1922, the nonprofit organization’s mission is to unite writers and their allies to celebrate creative expression and defend the liberties that make it possible. They do advocacy work and host public programming and events on literature and human rights.
Kristen Shahverdian, Director of Higher Education and Free Speech at PEN America, will speak on the importance of free speech. This Endowed Lecture is sponsored by the Harold H. Hersch Educational Fund.
